Essential Free Mac OSX Applications
By David Wildish • Apr 20th, 2008 • Category: Features, Reviews, Software, TechnologyWith an abundance of Free PC software out there for PC users out there, we Mac users can sometimes feel a little left out.
Sure we get a great selection of software that covers most bases in the domestic field with ilife.
However there are times when you just don’t have the Application to cater for your needs on this page I hope to introduce a range and round up of FREE software for the Mac environment.
Some of which is invaluable and some just for plane fun.
This range will be extended over time as they are discovered and collected from around the net.
1. FTP/SFTP Client
CyberDuck

Cyberduck is a reliable, simple and quick FTP/SFTP application, allowing you the features of paid for Applications such as transmit and Fetch. Additional features are the support for Apple’s Bonjour and support for drag and drop into folders
2. Graphic Programs
Gimp-Shop

Gimp-shop is a FREE open source photoshop clone, offering many of the features of the Industry standard of photoshop but without the huge price tag.

Another option in photo editing software is Seashore a cool little image editor similar to Gimp-Shop, but in a more simple an user friendly environment this is again totally free to download and opens up photoshop abilities to the general user.
3. Internet/Web
Adium

Adium is a totally brilliant piece of work that I hole heartedly recommend.
Any mac user will be familiar with the useless version of MSN we are given by Microsoft, which is feature lacking and as buggy as an ant hill.
Adium gives support to a vast range of chat programs from MSN, yahoo all the way to ichat all wrapped up in one solid application that gives back the features that you have been missing along with a vast choice of Plugins and customization.
4. Video
Onyx

Clean your mac and keep it in tip-top form with Onyx allowing you to verify the Startup Disk and the structure of OS X’s System files.
Free up hard-drive space by deleting all those hidden log files that are choking your mac, Run misc tasks of system maintenance, to configure some hidden parameters of the Finder, Dock, Dashboard, Exposé, Safari, and more.
Get your new mac feeling back with this great Application
5. Video
Flip4Mac WMV

Flip4Mac give you the ability to view windows media movies and online clips by allowing you to play most of your WMV files directly in QuickTime.
5. Widgets
iStat

iStat comes in 3 flavors a desk top Application, a widget (my personal fav) and a tool bar item.
Keeps you on-track of what’s going on under the hood of your mac, from disc use to heat and memory usage.
6. Backups
Carbon Copy Cloner

If you don’t like Time Machine or don’t have the disc space for ongoing Time machine cycles give CCC a try. Carbon Copy Cloner is a very useful tool for making exact copy backups of any disk, even across the network.
Note: Although I realize many of our users may be in a windows environment I also wanted to point any of our members and readers in the right direction of good and quality free software out there.
I can add a PC/Windows section to this page if I have a request for such a thing

I second the reccomendations on #’s 4, 5 and the other 5. They are great apps, will have to try out the others too, thanks David.
I think if I had Mac OS X that I would definitely get these programs. I know that gimp for Windows is pretty good, so I think it should be just as great on a Mac as well.
Thanks adrian, I will ask you to work with me on a post for a Windows version this coming week.
Thanks for this guide! I will buy a Mac in a short time, it’s nice to know about some great free programs!
Good list. Seashore looks cool. I’ve found iusethis.com for a source of popular apps and such. Off the top of my list would be the Unsanity products HERE, of course, as you’ve listed it already, Flip4Mac, and a few other good ones…for back up, Superduper, and a simple free one, iBackup….and an excellent vital info database, info.xhead, and another one by the Flip4Mac people, Drive In.
Thanks, I will look into those products.
I did use a lot Unsanity pluggins up until I got Leopard, but none seen Intel ready yet, so I missed those off.
Although it is a great site for gadgets
